More SGU Casting News
Stargate UniverseLou Diamond Phillips has joined the cast of Sci Fi Channel's new original series "SGU: Stargate Universe."

Rounding out the show's cast are Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman, both of whom have appeared on "Smallville," and Ming-Na.

The four join previously cast Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith on the series, which began production last week in Vancouver.

Edgier than its franchise predecessors, "SGU" follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves after they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base is attacked. The survivors, led by Dr. Nicholas Rush (Carlyle), emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.

Phillips will play the ill-fated expedition's Col. Telford, a lifelong military man. and the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition, according to the report. Now age 47, Phillips stormed onto the acting scene in the role of Ritchie Valens in 1987's La Bamba. He appeared in Young Guns and Young Guns II, Supernova, and many other films. On television, he has appeared on 24, The Twilight Zone, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and much more. He has a recurring role on Numb3rs, and in 2005 he collaborated with Stargate movie producer Dean Devlin on the SCI FI Channel miniseries The Triangle.
It is not yet known if Phillips will be a full-time, permanent member of SGU's cast, or if he will be a recurring or a one-off guest star. Stargate Atlantis launched with a big guest appearance by Robert Patrick (Col. Marshall Sumner), whose character was killed off in
the pilot episode.

Ming-Na plays Camille Wray, a caustic representative of the international body
that oversees the Stargate program and all related projects. When she is taken
to the Destiny against her will, she is furious and certain to make her
opinions on command decisions known.

Levesque will play the daughter and aide of a U.S. senator, and Huffman will play a field medic assigned to treat the seriously wounded. Levesque's Chloe Armstrong (the third and, we hope, final surname for the character) is a civilian and the daughter of U.S. Senator who finds herself way out of her league when she is trapped on board the Ancient ship Destiny in deep space. The 23-year-old actress has appeared in such series as Smallville, 2030 CE, Masters of Horror and Men In Trees. Her film career includes the recent TV movie Journey To the Center of the Earth. According to casting documents, while Chloe is a little spoiled by her silver-spoon upbringing, she is also politically and socially savvy. She dreams of following in her father's footsteps, but the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship tests her character.

Vancouver native Alaina Huffman (also credited as Alaina Kalanj) will play Tamara Johansen on Stargate Universe. At age 28, the actress is perhaps most recognizable to genre fans as Black Canary /Dinah Lance on Smallville. She also played Maureen Bowers on the SCI FI Channel's Painkiller Jane. Her list of guest appearances also includes NCIS, CSI: Miami, and CSI: NY. She is married with two children, according to the Internet Movie Database.

The character of Tamara is described in casting documents as tough and from a
modest background, who wanted to go to medical school but couldn't afford
it. She joined the Air Force instead, and though she now has only
paramedic-level training, she ends up being the most medically inclined person
on the ship, though she is overwhelmed by her lack of knowledge and
experience. Interestingly, the producers were initially seeking an Asian actress for the role.

"SGU" is scheduled to launch in October.
