The Frasier Syndrome
SpoilersEveryone is talking about it, Season 3 of Atlantis that is. And just 'what' are we talking about?

The fact that yet again, the fans are getting the fuzzy side of the Asgaard Yellow Food Cube. How?

They're killing off fan favorite Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion)..and just why are they doing that? It's not like Paul said, "I need a hellatious raise or that's IT I'm taking my stethoscope and walking!"or "I've had it with you lot, I'm doing Shakespeare Off Broadway!" Was he a terror to work with, you know one of those premadonna drama kings? Or did the writers just get tired of pleasing the fans?

I don't believe with all the technical help they have, that the writers suddenly developed writers block and don't remember how to write for a Doctor. If he'd decided to get married in real life, or his family member was ill and he had to pop off to play good husband, or nursemaid, it'd be understandable. He'd have our blessing to take care of himself & his loved ones. But No.

Killing off Carson is a REALLY bad idea.

Let's be serious, the SG writers are in a rut. It's almost become a drinking game, chug a whole Rootbeer when they say a team members' going to die. And it's a Medic.

Meaning, you expect the redshirt in the scene on Star Trek to be the one the Oogie Woogie Creatures munch to death. But it's to the point where good fans know that landing the role of a medic is like an instant kiss of death. You know the fans will LOVE your character, but sometime mid show, the writers will try to get a knee jerk reaction out of their fans by inexplicably killing off a character.

And if you're a medic...you might as well be a red shirt, because the guy, OR gal being whacked is YOU.

Why not off Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa)? I can think of a good reason why. He's like the secret love child of Teal'c from SG-1 & Tyr from Andromeda. I don't care how hunky he can be, what's his purpose? Albeit I'm probably still harboring issues over Aiden Ford's (Rainbow Sun Franks) equally abrupt departure from the series and Ronon's mysterious arrival. Co-inky dink? I think not.

Sure you can say Gunner, puh-lease, you're exaggerating. You're taking the death of a fictional television character too seriously. To which I'll reply "Am Not"..if you want to see a bad reaction to a character death, talk to me about Dr. Who (Colin Baker takes over from Peter Davidson), Chicago Hope (Peter McNicols characters death), X-files (Lone Gunmen), Farscape (Zahn), Serenity (Wash) or The Shield (Strike Team Det. Curtis Lemanski) and you'll get 2 what were they thinking's?, 4 Oh hell no's, and 1 that was so sad.

And for you people who think I'm wrong, about my theory that all the Medics go to the big ER in the sky, I have 2 words: Janet Frasier (SG-1's Teryl Rothery).
~Gunner Fri 1 June 2007
*The previous Gunnetorial was brought to you by the letter "W" for What The Heck were they thinking & the #2 because the scarlett ink of the death of 2 medics is on the writers hands...enough is enough. I demand better mytharcs for Stargate Franchise Doctors/Medics/Scientists...and if they don't listen to me. I'll stand on my soap box and demand it outside thier bedroom window with a sign and a sandwich my Mommie packed for me. So believe you me, I can pickett Alll night long..till the soup in my thermos runs out, then I'll just grumble obnoxious things when the writers names roll past in the credits*
